U3A Box Hill recently hosted delegates from the Jiangxi Elderly Education Program at Jiangxi Open University in China. The September visit brought together two worlds of senior learning: one is grassroots and volunteer-driven; the other is part of China’s rapidly expanding state-sponsored system serving a population facing dramatic demographic change.

Two Systems Of Senior Learning, One Goal
In September, President Valerie Bourke and Network Victoria representative Susan Webster warmly welcomed three delegates and their translator. They prepared materials in Chinese for the visitors who came from a country where elderly education has become a national priority:
The numbers tell a compelling story. China has 264 million people aged 60 and above, that is 18.7% of China’s population. To meet their needs, the government has established over 70,000 universities and schools serving more than 10 million older students.
In addition, another 3.4 million older learners participate through distance learning programs; this reflects the enormous demand for senior education in China.
Observing the U3A Difference
During their visit, the delegation observed several classes. Our Strength & Balance class particularly impressed them. They noted that physical activity ranks among the most popular offerings in China’s elderly education system.
However, they were intrigued by fundamental differences: Chinese seniors pay per class and choose from government-curated programs; in contrast, U3A members join a community where volunteers design courses based on shared interests and local needs.
President Bourke and Ms Webster explained how the U3A movement harnesses community activism and local autonomy. This approach contrasts sharply with the centralized approach the visitors knew, where universities for seniors expand into communities and online platforms to meet surging demand.
Recognition for U3A Box Hill
This international exchange reflects positively on U3A Box Hill and its model of community-based lifelong learning, as the delegation tours leading institutions across Australia and New Zealand.
The visit proved that seniors worldwide share a timeless truth, whether they learn through volunteer passion or government investment: “One is never too old to learn, never too old to enjoy happiness.“
