In world news dominated by ‘bad’ news, nations at war with people suffering and dying, violent and random attacks on bystanders, women and children and intolerance of others’ race, religion and/or sexuality leading to violent extremism, we could be overcome at the evil perpetrated, man’s inhumanity to man.
Thankfully, the creative genius of humanity comes to the fore in science, technology and the arts. Perhaps the foremost of the Arts is music, the language that crosses all boundaries.
To begin the week with the regular class of Music Appreciation sets a tone of positivity, a kind of meditation giving impetus and meaning to the coming days.
MUSIC
It transcends mere words and possesses the ability to portray the deepest feelings of our humanity.
In one instance it has the power to express ecstatic joy; children at play, a blossoming romance, a wedding party and festive celebrations, a journey real or imagined.
It can bring us quiet serenity or disturbing reality.
For those who believe in God, it can sing of glory and praise, offer thanksgiving, beg forgiveness and utter a cri de couer from life’s vicissitudes.
It is a powerful force able to transport us back in time to recall persons, places and events; to reflect on our innocence and naivety, those who have brought us love and life, our struggles and successes, our trusts and betrayals, our mistakes and wrongdoings.
It is a unifying force of hope in the midst of gloom and devastation.
It can be a catalyst for reconciliation and celebrates shared endeavour.
It resonates with and celebrates the beauty, power and wonder of nature. It portrays seasons, storms and stillness; the babbling brook, a winding river and ocean roar, autumn fall and summer nights, spring’s revival and the melancholia of winter; icy waters and desolate landscape, morning light, shimmering moonbeams and gentle lullabies, mountain myths and legendary heroes. It evokes the song of the lark ascending, the cuckoo’s call, the majestic swan, the buzz of the bumblebee and the carnival of the animals.
It dances with national pride – the waltz, the csada and the mazurka and it captures the energy of city life and the languor of a small town.
It presents an ideal vision for humanity, an Ode to Joy, where all shall be recognised as brothers and sisters.

The Music Appreciation programs are planned to inform, entertain and broaden horizons. While the focus is on the “classical” style, the occasional foray is made into the world of jazz and swing. Our members enjoy social interaction, guest speakers and opportunities to attend recitals by professional musicians.
Presentations have changed over thirty years, but as evident in comments made by one of our current members, enthusiasm for the class remains.

Classes are held throughout school terms on Monday mornings from 9.45 to 11.15 in Strabane Hall, 29 Strabane Ave. Mont Albert North.
About the Class
Our Music Appreciation group welcomes members with interests spanning Folk, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary music, along with occasional explorations into jazz, swing and world music. Each year, the program includes:
- Documentary and visual presentations
- Contributions from a range of volunteer presenters
- Guest professional musicians
- Optional excursions to concerts and music-related venues
Whether you are new to music appreciation or have been listening for a lifetime, this friendly and enthusiastic group offers a warm welcome.
