What does dedication look like? At U3A Box Hill, it is a couple who splits their time between grey nomad adventures and giving back to their Melbourne community – both in front of the class and behind the scenes.
Lee and Lester Wallin recently received U3A Box Hill’s Distinguished Service Certificate, recognising their exceptional contribution to our seniors’ learning community.
The Spirit of Generosity
Up front, the Wallins share their passions with fellow seniors. Lester brings music history to life, tutoring both Australian Folk Music and Music of the Rock ‘n Roll Era classes. Lee leads engaging Current Affairs discussions.
Behind the scenes, their contributions multiply. Lee serves on the Committee of Management as Publicity Officer, while Lester applies his hands-on skills to building and repairing partitions and picture rails around our Box Hill facility. Need tables and chairs moved, tablecloths, decorations, equipment laid out, indoors and outdoors tidying up? Whenever U3A Box Hill holds events and working bees, chances are the Wallins will be busy making it all happen.
As President Valerie Bourke noted in presenting the award:
“All of this is done with smiles and in the spirit of generosity that lies at the core of our U3A. To put it simply – as a couple they make our days better.”
Active Retirement, Active Community
The Wallins prove that retirement doesn’t mean slowing down. Whether travelling Australia as grey nomads or volunteering at U3A Box Hill, they demonstrate how seniors can stay active, engaged, and make meaningful contributions to their community.
