The U3A Box Hill Christmas party was held at Strabane Hall on 25 November.
The President, Bruce Bourke opened proceedings by welcoming special guests, life members and all present. The U3A Box Hill Choir conducted by Margaret Henderson presented a number of pieces, and everyone joined in for two well known Christmas carols.
Bruce Bourke presented a ‘Distinguished Service award’ to Barbara Lovell for her contribution to U3A Box Hill.
and thanked Colin & Eleanor Mayfield for their services in catering for functions over many years.
And then to lunch…
A raffle to raise money for a new TV set was drawn by invited guests.

It was the night before Christmas when all through the house not a person was stirring especially my Spouse With the smells of cinnamon scenting the air I hung the stockings by the chimney with care
While my spouse was soundly asleep in his bed; visions of things to do whirled around in my head. So I got into my nightie; then put out the cat and had just settled down for a well-deserved nap.
Then from out in the garden I heard such a clatter so I ran to my window to see what was the matter. As I peered into the darkness I heard a loud crash and I saw the dog from next door tipping over our trash.
Soon what to my wandering eyes did appear? On my lawn was my neighbour; drinking a beer. The moon gave lustre of mid-day below so I called out and told him where he should go.
Although he was drunk he was lively and quick and more rapid than eagles he began to pick the rubbish; which he hurled at my window pane and in a drunken stupor he called me a name.
So I ran down the stairs and soon was out on the lawn I decided to make him wish that he’d never been born then I gave him back what he’d said word for word. But he retaliated with words that I’d never heard.
Fed up with his language I called him a jerk then I picked up some rubbish and went to work, I was having such fun and soon laughed at the sight I couldn’t believe how I acted that night.
The stump of a carrot I’d stuffed into his teeth, and some coils of cooked spaghetti shrouded him like a wreath He had a broad face and well-rounded belly and as he began to laugh it shook like jelly
Then the dog began barking at such a sight I’ve never laughed as much as I did that night When I left the scene chuckling and went into the house… no-one knew what had happened… not even my spouse. (To be continued)

U3A Box Hill celebrates centenarian still attending classes
We breed long stayers at Box Hill. In January this year (2018) we celebrated a 100th birthday. George Watson still attends French class as does his daughter. Here he is seen with foundation member Lyn Akeroyd celebrating with class members and tutor Francoise Garnier. Have any other U3As a centenarian on their class lists? Or is George the oldest U3A class member in the country / the world?
2018 — Members’ Gallery Art Fair #
With the encouragement and guidance of our wonderful tutor Clare Hopkins, nine members of the Creative Photography class submitted entries for the Friends of Monash Gallery of Art Photo Competition. Of the 400 or so photos submitted altogether, 50 were chosen to be displayed in the gallery. Of those 50, 6 were from members of our class, and from that perspective alone we did very well. Better still – of those 6, 3 were chosen as winners in their categories. Colin Lampshire won Best Architectural Image, and Vicki Goodall won both the Best Nature Image and Best Landscape Image.
Very well done everyone who entered, and in particular, a very big THANK YOU to Clare for working so hard in getting us to participate in this competition, and for her expert advice and guidance during the process.
Later in the year all the photos we submitted will be exhibited at Strabane Hall for everyone to enjoy. If you can’t wait that long they are on display at Monash Gallery of Art, Ferntree Gully Rd, Wheelers Hill. The cafe there is good too.
