🎭 Cantonese Opera Singing

Five of our talented vocalists were all smiles at the Cantonese Opera Singing class on July 28! Under the guidance of Hing Wah Chow, members are progressing from memorising duets to confidently performing solos. The learning journey is simple but effective: Memorise → Sing → Improve → Solo. At this week’s session, the chosen piece touched on a familiar theme in traditional opera: A man goes off to war, while his sorrowful wife longs for them to stay together forever. On Wednesday, 2nd July 2025, U3A Box Hill had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Paul Kertes, a highly respected cardiologist with over 30 years of clinical experience, for a public talk titled Understanding Heart Disease. Close to 40 members attended this informative and accessible one-hour session. Dr. Kertes delivered a clear, engaging, and thoroughly informative presentation that translated complex medical concepts into everyday language. Karaoke Returns to Mecwacare: A Joyful Reunion

Since 2018, the Karaoke Entertainment Group has brought music and smiles to the residents of Mecwacare Mont Albert—our lovely neighbours next to U3A Box Hill. Before the COVID pandemic, we performed five times a year: one show each term and a festive Christmas concert. The performances delighted residents and gave our singers valuable experience, especially ahead of the annual Seniors Festival at Federation Square. When Mecwacare’s original building was redeveloped, our connection paused. At U3A Box Hill, we’re fortunate to have a wide range of health and fitness classes aimed at supporting mature adults to stay active, mobile, and confident. One such class that has drawn heartfelt praise is Tom’s Strength and Balance Course. The group uses traditional and contemporary methods to produce jewellery as well as non-wearable pieces. Each week, members bring their creativity and refine their skills.
