About the project

Our vibrant Indigenous garden is a testament to the dedication and passion of our volunteer team. Led by Jan Ackeroyd, a driving force behind the project, this initiative has brought together a dedicated group of volunteers: Stanley Barker, Simon Earl, Elliott Earl and others.

Thanks to their tireless efforts, the once-bare area around Strabane Hall is now a thriving oasis of native plants. We’ve partnered with Greenlink Community Nursery, Whitehorse City Council, and Gardens for Wildlife to bring this vision to life.

30^th July 2024 – Emerging Indigenous Garden

Thanks to Jan, Stanley, Jeff, Simon & Elliott because . . .

Now in July 2024 – Our South-East corner seedlings have bedded in & are sprouting and the driveway has fresh promise.

January 2024 / May 2024 the group worked along the driveway & planted out the Ashmole Reserve bed

Mid-December 2023 they ripped out invasive species, weeded & repressed or mulched the South-East bed

Early-December 2023 – their action began

November 2023 – the group eyed our weeds, liased with Whitehorse & Gardens for Wildlife and presented plans to the Committee of Management

The two ‘Before’ shots, taken seven months ago in December 2023, show last summer’s seeded weeds and the Gardening Group tackling the mess. Today’s ‘After’ (July 2024) image illustrates the cleared weeds, the removal of the chicken wire, and the impressive growth since the 2024 autumnal planting.

30^th June 2024

Begun in 2022 & updated during 2023, we’re making steady progress. Last weekend’s efforts saw planting of the SW corner of our car park. Rootstock nurtured over Winter went in.

Welcome to the new banksias (Silver & Splendid) and Jolly Millers (Spyridium parvifolium) beside the driveway. Fingers-crossed for healthy development over Winter
